Beekeeping associations and individual keepers run school visits, public talks and demonstration apiaries to build lasting awareness of pollinators. A well-run visit balances a genuinely engaging encounter with bees against strict safety practice: a fenced observation distance, veils for anyone near an open hive, and a session format matched to the audience.

How it works

• Audience size — more visitors gather around the demonstration hive, each animated to face the presenter and occasionally look away.
• Season — controls how many foragers actively fly out to the wildflowers; outreach programmes are timed around active nectar flow so visitors see real behaviour.
• Safety barrier — the rope-and-post cordon around the hive represents the standard "keep back" distance taught in every outreach session.
• Session type — switches between a seated classroom talk, an open-hive frame demonstration, and a honey-tasting table, each changing what props appear.
• Veils — toggles protective headgear on visitors standing closest to an open hive.

Controls

• Audience size — number of visitors in the semicircle (4–36).
• Season — nectar-flow strength, driving forager traffic (0–100%).
• Safety barrier radius — distance of the cordon from the hive (3–9m).
• Session type — talk / hive-open demo / tasting table.
• Veils toggle — show or hide protective gear.
