How it works

Certification exams score candidates with Item Response Theory (IRT): each item has a difficulty b and discrimination a, and the 2-parameter logistic (2PL) model gives the probability of a correct answer:

P(correct|θ) = 1 / (1 + exp(-a·(θ-b)))

Each item answered is a real Bernoulli draw from that probability against the candidate's hidden true θ. The height of the terrain at every point along the θ-axis is the real log-likelihood of all answers so far:

LL(θ) = Σ [yᵢ·ln Pᵢ + (1-yᵢ)·ln(1-Pᵢ)]

The glowing marker performs real gradient ascent on this surface — climbing along dLL/dθ = Σ aᵢ(yᵢ-Pᵢ) step by step — so it visibly walks uphill toward the peak, which is the maximum-likelihood ability estimate θ̂.

True ability θ — the hidden skill level being estimated; the peak the marker climbs toward should sit close to this.
Item difficulty / discrimination range — the random item pool drawn each round; a wider discrimination range sharpens the peak faster.
Pass threshold — the θ a real exam requires to certify the candidate.
Terrain — log-likelihood value at each candidate θ, given every item answered so far; it reshapes and usually sharpens with each new item.

Real-world relevance: production adaptive-testing engines (GRE, many professional/IT certifications) run exactly this optimization after every response to decide the next item and the final score.
