On hot summer days a honey bee colony's first job is not gathering nectar but keeping the broodnest below about 36–37°C. When the hive gets too warm, workers stop foraging efficiently and instead crowd onto the outside of the hive in a behaviour called bearding — vacating the interior to cut internal heat load and free up space for evaporative cooling by the bees that remain inside fanning water droplets.
A single heavily bearding colony on a hot afternoon can look alarming — a dark, moving mass hanging off the front of the hive — but it is usually a normal cooling response, not a sign of swarming. Beekeepers use bearding as a quick visual cue that more shade, ventilation or water is needed.

Outside temperature, shade coverage, screened-bottom-board ventilation and available water combine into an estimated hive interior temperature. Once that estimate crosses a comfort threshold, a growing share of the colony vacates the interior and clusters on the front exterior board — the visible bearding response beekeepers watch for.
Raise the outside temperature and watch the interior estimate and bearding cluster grow. Then add shade cloth coverage, open the screened bottom board, and add water stations to see how each intervention pulls the colony back toward normal indoor activity.
Bees regulate hive temperature far more precisely than most insects manage — the broodnest is normally held within about a degree or two of 35°C, since brood raised outside that narrow band can develop with wing or learning defects.
