How it works

Polar bears cannot outswim seals — they catch them almost exclusively from sea ice, ambushing at breathing holes or hauled-out resting spots. Sea ice is therefore a hunting platform, not just habitat.

The warming slider shrinks and fragments that platform two ways at once: total ice area shrinks, and the ice season — the window during which any platform exists at all — gets shorter (ice forms later, melts earlier). Off-ice, in the ice-free season, the bear rests on shore, fasting, unable to hunt.

During the ice season, fewer and more widely separated floes force the bear to swim long open-water gaps between hunting-viable patches. That swimming burns stored energy fast — and unlike a successful hunt, it never replenishes the reserve. Each year's average energy and hunt-success rate roll into a body condition score that carries partial memory into the next year, and reproductive success only kicks in once body condition clears a fat-reserve threshold — so several lean ice years compound into a steepening decline, not just a single bad season.
