How it works

Two habitat patches sit at opposite ends of a fragmented landscape, joined only by a narrow migration corridor. Each animal in the herd walks the corridor's centerline with a small lateral wander; along the way, encroaching barriers — roads, fences, buildings — occupy part of the clear width. An animal that drifts into a barrier is turned back toward its home patch and counted as blocked; one that reaches the far patch is counted as a successful crossing, then turns around to migrate back, keeping the herd in continuous motion.

Corridor width — the lateral space animals have to move through; a wider corridor tolerates more barrier encroachment before crossings fail.
Urbanization pressure — how many barrier structures crowd the corridor; more structures narrow the usable clear width and push the connectivity index down.
Migration speed — how fast the herd travels between patches; faster migrants spend less time exposed to barrier encounters per crossing.
Connectivity index — the modeled fraction of the corridor's width that stays clear of barriers, the same quantity conservation biologists estimate when prioritizing which corridors to protect.

Real-world relevance: this clear-width vs. barrier-density trade-off is exactly what drives habitat connectivity planning — wildlife overpasses, protected buffer zones and fragmentation limits all exist to keep a corridor's connectivity index high enough for a population to keep moving between the resources it depends on.
