Forest Fire and Regrowth Lab: Rothermel Spread, Firebreaks and 100-Year Succession

Forest Fire and Regrowth Lab Blender 5.2Fire as a natural process: spread, burn-out, and 100 years of recovery

Wind speed (10 m, open) 8 m/s

the wind at flame height is reduced by the stand (0.15 to 0.40)

Wind blows toward E (90°)

Dead-fuel moisture M_f 6 %

fire cannot spread above the moisture of extinction M_x (12 to 30 %)

Terrain relief (slope) x1.0

0 = flat plain, 1.6 = steep ridges (up to about 35 degrees)

Firebreak width 0 m

an idealised cleared strip across the whole landscape, square to the wind (or paint your own with the Dig firebreak tool)

Firebreak distance from ignition 500 m

Live foliar moisture 100 %

lower values make crown fire easier (Van Wagner)

Daily moisture cycle (driest 15:00, wettest 03:00)

Brush radius (cells) 2

t = 0 min simulated time (x60 = one minute per second)
