The glowing sphere is Earth's system; the nine towers ringing it are the planetary boundaries framework (Rockström/Steffen): climate change, biosphere integrity, land-system change, freshwater use, biogeochemical flows (nitrogen & phosphorus), ocean acidification, stratospheric ozone, atmospheric aerosol loading and novel entities. Each tower's height and colour track a normalized pressure value — green near zero, amber approaching the boundary at 1.0, red once transgressed, and it keeps climbing past that line exactly as several real boundaries already have.
d(boundary)/dt = driver_rate · human_pressure − recovery·boundary
biosphere += k_climate·climate + k_land·landUse (coupled, not independent)
ocean_acid tracks climate (shared CO2 source)
- Fossil fuel burn — pushes climate forcing and ocean acidification (shared CO2 source) and atmospheric aerosol loading; climate has very slow recovery, matching CO2's long atmospheric residence time.
- Fertilizer input — drives the biogeochemical flows boundary (synthetic nitrogen & phosphorus runoff), the boundary humanity has already overshot furthest in reality.
- Deforestation / land conversion — drives land-system change directly and feeds into biosphere integrity loss (habitat loss compounds species loss).
- Population & consumption growth — scales freshwater use and novel entities (synthetic chemicals, plastics, pollutants) together.
Biosphere integrity is deliberately not independent — it accumulates pressure from both climate and land-system change, the way real ecological collapse rarely has one cause. Stratospheric ozone slowly self-heals (the one boundary humanity has pulled back from, post-Montreal Protocol) regardless of the other sliders, a reminder that coordinated policy can reverse a trend the other eight are still riding upward.
