The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment groups the benefits nature provides for free into provisioning, regulating, cultural and supporting services. This scene models three regulating/provisioning services side by side: a forest that draws down atmospheric CO₂, a meadow where bees pollinate flowering crops, and a wetland that filters dirty inflow into clean outflow. None of these are paid for in a market, yet all three have a real replacement cost — which is exactly how ecologists put a dollar figure on them.

- Forest density — more trees absorb more CO₂ per year; each falling grey orb reaching the canopy represents carbon being drawn down out of the air.
- Pollinators — more bees visit more flowers per minute, raising the fraction of the meadow that blooms gold (pollinated) instead of staying dull green; roughly three-quarters of food crops worldwide depend on animal pollination.
- Wetland size — a bigger reed bed processes more water per year and reaches full clarity faster; watch the stream turn from muddy brown to clear cyan as it crosses the reeds.
- Time speed — spins the whole system faster so slower services (forest growth) become visible without waiting.
The dollar figures above are illustrative order-of-magnitude estimates, not a formal valuation — but the shape of the result is the real point: services that cost nothing to use can still be worth an enormous amount, and removing the forest, the bees or the wetland removes that value along with them.
