Forest Fragmentation & Edge-Effect Simulator

This simulation demonstrates the consequences of deforestation on ecosystems and biodiversity by rendering a real 3D forest grid that you can log with three different clearing patterns and watch respond. Rather than treating "biodiversity" as a single slider tied to logging rate, it tracks the actual spatial structure of what's left: how many disconnected fragments the forest breaks into, how much of the remaining canopy is edge habitat versus untouched interior core, and an estimated core-species count derived from the ecological species-area relationship. Clearing the same fraction of trees produces very different outcomes depending on pattern -- a single advancing clear-cut front preserves a large, mostly-core remainder, while scattered single-tree removal or scattered patch logging shreds the canopy into edge-dominated slivers that support far fewer forest-interior species for the same area lost. A regrowth control lets you explore recovery, and the "How it works" panel walks through the underlying species-area law and the SLOSS (single large or several small) trade-off it illustrates.
