Coastal dunes grow through a feedback loop: dune grass traps windblown sand, the dune rises, and the plants grow to keep pace, trapping even more sand. That growing dune absorbs storm-surge energy that would otherwise reach the land behind it. Protect the vegetation with a boardwalk and fencing, or let foot traffic trample it, then run the wind and trigger storms to watch the loop run forward as growth or in reverse as a compounding erosion collapse.
