How it works

A 10×10 habitat grid carries a quality score per cell that drifts each year toward degradation or restoration. The wildlife population follows logistic growth toward a carrying capacity set by mean habitat quality, reduced by threat-driven mortality. Each survey samples only a fraction of the grid — the coverage slider — and extrapolates a population estimate from what was actually counted, exactly as real field surveys (transects, camera traps, point counts) never see the whole landscape at once.

Survey frequency — how often the grid is resampled each year; more frequent surveys catch a fast-moving trend earlier.
Sampling coverage — the fraction of the grid actually surveyed each round; low coverage means bigger extrapolation error, shown as dimmer, unsurveyed individuals.
Habitat trend — the yearly drift of habitat quality; positive values simulate restoration, negative values simulate degradation or habitat loss.
Threat pressure — poaching, disease or disturbance pressure that adds directly to the population's mortality rate.

Real-world relevance: this sample-then-extrapolate loop, and the lag between a habitat trend and a confident population estimate, is the core reason conservation programs favor long, consistent monitoring series over a single snapshot survey.
