This biotechnology simulation zooms into a bioreactor where an engineered PETase-type enzyme breaks down solid PET plastic waste — the same biological principle behind industrial enzymatic plastic recycling. Rather than the bulk microbial-growth kinetics used for oil spills or contaminated soil, plastic degradation is surface-limited: each solid fragment shrinks from the outside in, following a shrinking-core model where the rate depends on the fragment's current surface area. Tune enzyme concentration, temperature, pH and plastic crystallinity to see how each one accelerates or collapses the degradation rate, watch monomer (terephthalic acid + ethylene glycol) release accumulate, and track the estimated time to reach 90% cleanup.
