Why do earthquakes happen?
Lithospheric plates move slowly through the viscous asthenosphere. At their boundaries, they rub against each other, and friction temporarily 'locks' movement โ€” strain accumulates in the rocks. When strain exceeds the strength of friction, a sudden rupture occurs: the plates shift abruptly, releasing energy as seismic waves โ€” this is an earthquake.
