Why do earthquakes happen?
Lithospheric plates creep through the viscous asthenosphere. At their boundary, friction temporarily locks the rock while strain accumulates. When strain exceeds the fault's strength, a sudden rupture releases the stored energy as seismic waves — an earthquake.
