Eternal Inflation: Bubble Universe Nucleation

This simulation renders the leading physical model for "a universe beyond our observable one": eternal inflation. A patch of exponentially expanding false-vacuum spacetime is shown as a comoving box; true-vacuum bubble universes nucleate stochastically inside it via quantum tunnelling, expand at a controllable fraction of the speed of light, and are redshifted smaller in comoving coordinates as the background's Hubble expansion outruns them. When two bubbles' walls meet, they leave a permanent collision scar — the same kind of signature cosmologists search for as a disk-shaped anomaly in the cosmic microwave background. Because the false vacuum always expands faster than any finite rate can convert it, this process never globally ends, generating an infinite multiverse of pocket universes, one of which could in principle be our own.
