How it works

Each region is a physical server rack running a hypervisor that hosts virtual machines, stacked in three layers: Infrastructure (steel, bottom) provides raw compute/storage, Platform (blue, middle) is the OS/middleware layer, and Application (orange, top) runs the actual workload. Dim boxes are provisioned-but-idle capacity; bright glowing boxes are VMs currently running traffic. Pulses along the network tubes are SDN/VPN packets flowing between the internet hub and each region.

Instances needed = ceil(Demand% / 100 × 12)
CPU utilization = Needed / (Active regions × VMs per region)
Availability = 100% while capacity ≥ demand, degrades under overload

Traffic demand — how much load auto-scaling has to absorb; instances light up region by region as demand rises.
VMs per region — the hypervisor's virtualization density: how many VMs each physical server can host.
Active regions — redundancy: distributing instances across multiple data centers so no single server is a single point of failure.
Simulate region failure — knocks out one region; if the others have spare capacity, traffic reroutes and availability recovers, otherwise the cluster is overloaded.
