How it works

Every beta program (TestFlight, Google Play Console) has to answer one question with a limited tester budget: which testers, if enrolled, cover the most distinct device × OS-version combinations? That is the classic NP-hard set cover problem. Each candidate tester "covers" the subset of the 9×10 device/OS grid their hardware and channel represent.

Choosing the K testers that maximize total coverage exactly is intractable at scale, so real QA tooling uses the standard greedy heuristic: at each step, enrol whichever remaining candidate covers the most devices not yet covered by anyone already enrolled.

This greedy rule is provably within a factor of (1 − 1/e) ≈ 63% of the optimal coverage for any fixed K, and needs at most ln(n) + 1 testers to reach full coverage of an n-item universe — a real approximation guarantee, not a heuristic hand-wave. The tester profile overlap slider controls how much candidate device sets cluster around the same popular handsets (high overlap = testers keep re-covering the same flagship phones, low overlap = each tester's device pool is closer to independent). The device pool size slider changes how many candidate testers you're choosing K from — a bigger pool gives the greedy strategy more distinct sets to pick between, closing the gap to full coverage faster.
