Invasive vs Non-Invasive Brain-Computer Interfaces

Brain-computer interfaces (BCI) span a spectrum from safe scalp EEG caps to surgically implanted intracortical arrays, and each step deeper into the tissue trades safety for signal quality. This simulation places electrodes at the three real depths used in research and clinical practice — scalp, cortical surface (ECoG) and intracortical (Utah Array / Neuralink-style threads) — and shows firing neurons, signal attenuation and decode accuracy responding live as you switch interface type, slide through the technology's real 2004–2026 history, and adjust neural activity and noise.
