Honeybees can only actively cool a hive so far. Adult bees keep the brood nest near 35°C by fanning air with their wings and spreading collected water for evaporative cooling; above roughly 36–38°C the colony is under real heat stress, and past 40°C wax comb can soften and sag, deforming or collapsing under the weight of stores and brood. A well-fanned hive can move enough air to create a visible heat-haze shimmer at the entrance on a hot day — beekeepers sometimes call this "bearding," when bees cluster outside the entrance simply to get their own bodies out of an overheated box.

Brood needs roughly 35°C. Passive ventilation, active fanning, shade and evaporative cooling from water each pull the internal temperature down; the comb frames tint from amber to red and visibly sag once the wax-softening threshold is crossed.
Raise the outside temperature to simulate a heatwave, then use ventilation, fanning, shade and water to bring the brood-nest temperature back into the safe range. Watch the coloured airflow particles speed up and vent through the roof.
On extreme days beekeepers may see "bearding" — a curtain of bees clustering outside the entrance simply to get their own bodies out of an overheated box and reduce internal crowding.
