UV-B, the Ozone Hole & Phytoplankton

Stratospheric ozone shields the biosphere from UV-B radiation, and when it thins — most dramatically over Antarctica each spring — more UV-B reaches the sea surface and penetrates into the upper mixed layer, where it damages DNA and suppresses phytoplankton photosynthesis, the base of the marine food web. This simulator renders a translucent ozone shell colored on the real TOMS satellite scale, a water column of instanced phytoplankton distributed by depth, and computes surface UV Index and a DNA-damage index from the ozone column and solar zenith angle via the radiation amplification factor, then propagates that dose through the water with the Beer–Lambert law and a Kirk-type photoinhibition curve so you can watch productivity collapse near the surface as ozone thins and recover with depth and water clarity.
