When a hard freeze arrives with no warning, there is no time for a full winter setup — only fast, targeted moves. This cutaway hive lets you apply the four interventions a beekeeper can usually still fit in the hours before a cold snap: a wind-blocking wrap, an entrance reducer to cut draughts, a moisture quilt above the frames to stop condensation dripping onto the cluster, and an emergency candy board placed directly over the winter cluster so bees can reach food without breaking cluster.
A winter cluster can hold its core near 34–35°C even when it is -20°C outside, but the outer mantle bees may sit just above 8–10°C — cold enough that a mantle bee separated from the cluster for too long will chill to the point it can no longer move back in.

A candy board placed in direct contact with a winter cluster is often the single fastest emergency intervention — unlike syrup, which can freeze solid, solid sugar stays available exactly where the bees can already reach it.
