How it works

Each control estimates a real emission source in tonnes of CO2‑equivalent per year (tCO2e/yr) using published emission factors, then sums them into your annual footprint. That footprint is drained continuously from a starting personal carbon budget — your lifetime share of what's left of the world's 1.5°C carbon budget — so the tank empties faster the bigger your footprint, exactly like a fuel gauge running down at a rate you control.

Diet — annual dietary footprint from Scarborough et al. (2014, Climatic Change): vegan 1.05 t, vegetarian 1.39 t, average (moderate meat) 2.00 t, high‑meat 2.63 t CO2e/yr.
Return flights — 0.5 tCO2e per short/medium‑haul round trip (DEFRA‑style factor including radiative forcing).
Budget remaining — depletes in simulated time (1 real second ≈ 3 months) at your current annual rate; the colored bubbles show which category is consuming the budget fastest.

This is a simplified but real accounting model, not decoration: change any control and the drain rate, the years‑left countdown and the liquid level all respond immediately to the same numbers a household carbon calculator would compute.
