How it works

Six facility types form a closed byproduct loop, modelled after real eco-industrial parks such as Kalundborg, Denmark:

Power Plant  → waste heat → Refinery
Refinery     → fly ash    → Cement Plant
Steel Mill   → slag       → Cement Plant
Cement Plant → CO₂        → Greenhouse
Greenhouse   → biomass    → Paper Mill
Paper Mill   → scrap      → Steel Mill

Each facility produces exactly one unit of its byproduct per cycle. A producer and a consumer can be linked only if (a) the consumer's needs list includes the producer's byproduct, (b) the straight-line distance between them on the site map is under the max pipe distance slider — pipeline capital cost grows roughly linearly with length, so real symbiotic exchanges rarely exceed a few kilometres — and (c) neither facility has already reached its capacity (maximum simultaneous pipe connections).

Candidate links are sorted by distance and accepted greedily, shortest first — a simple stand-in for the network-design optimisation used in real industrial-symbiosis feasibility studies. The readouts track the fraction of total byproduct output that finds a match (waste diverted) and the fraction of facilities that receive at least one of their needed inputs from a neighbour instead of buying it new (virgin input saved). The strip under the map is a live bar chart of each byproduct's share of all accepted links.
