Mangrove Soil Carbon Depth Profile

Mangrove forests are among the most carbon-dense ecosystems on Earth, and almost all of that "blue carbon" sits underground. This 2D depth-profile simulator grows a live stratigraphic column next to a plotted carbon-density curve: fresh organic-rich sediment accumulates at the surface, and every layer is progressively buried as new material piles on top. While a layer sits within the oxygenated near-surface zone it decays quickly, but once accretion carries it below the water table into anoxic, waterlogged mud, decomposition slows by more than an order of magnitude — locking the remaining carbon away for centuries. Adjust accretion rate, organic input, and the depth of the oxic/anoxic boundary to watch the depth-profile curve reshape in real time, alongside live carbon-stock and burial-efficiency readouts.
