How it works

Mechanochemistry replaces a dissolving solvent with mechanical energy: reactant powder and hard milling balls are shaken together in a jar, and the repeated high-energy impacts supply the activation energy a solvent-based reflux would normally provide. This is Green Chemistry Principle #5 (safer solvents and auxiliaries) taken to its limit — the solvent volume drops to zero.

Reaction progress is modelled as pseudo-first-order in unconverted reactant, with the rate constant scaling with milling energy input:

X is fractional conversion, f the milling frequency, BPR the ball-to-powder mass ratio, s a feed-fineness factor (finer powder = more contact area = faster reaction), and E the cumulative mechanical energy dose per gram of charge (kJ/g) — the mechanochemical analogue of a thermal budget in solution chemistry.

Milling frequency — how fast the jar shakes; raises both impact rate and impact energy (k scales faster than linearly with f).
Ball-to-powder ratio — more/heavier milling balls per gram of powder means more frequent collisions with reactant particles.
Feed particle size — finer feed exposes more surface per impact, so it converts faster for the same energy input.
Reaction pathway — each real mechanochemical reaction has its own intrinsic rate constant k0; Suzuki-Miyaura coupling is intrinsically slower under milling than a Knoevenagel condensation.

Because no solvent is added or evaporated, the process eliminates the single largest waste stream (and the largest share of the E-factor) of a conventional solution-phase synthesis, at the cost of higher direct mechanical/electrical energy input — the trade-off this reactor lets you explore.
