Green chemistry favors reaction designs where nearly all reagent mass ends up in the desired product, minimizing hazardous solvent use and waste.
Atom economy = MW(product) / Σ MW(reagents) × 100%
E-factor = mass(waste) / mass(product)
- Reagent feed rate — starting material fed into the reactor per cycle.
- Catalyst loading — number of active catalytic sites available to convert reagent to product.
- Temperature — reaction rate multiplier; higher temperature speeds conversion in both pathways.
- Solvent recycling — fraction of solvent recovered and reused rather than discarded as waste.
The Green pathway uses a selective catalyst and high atom economy so most reagent becomes product with little waste; the Traditional pathway uses stoichiometric reagents that generate large amounts of byproduct waste (shown as red particles) per unit product.
