This simulation investigates one of the central mechanisms behind organic water pollution: the Streeter–Phelps dissolved-oxygen sag curve. Release an organic load — sewage, agricultural runoff, or industrial effluent — into a flowing river and watch dissolved oxygen fall as bacterial decay (deoxygenation) outpaces atmospheric reaeration, then recover downstream once the load is consumed. Tune the organic load, deoxygenation rate, reaeration rate and flow velocity to see how a fast, turbulent stream shrugs off the same discharge that would suffocate a slow, still one, and read off the critical distance and minimum oxygen level where fish kills become likely.
