How it works

Each glucose monomer joins the growing chain through a condensation reaction: its C1 hydroxyl attacks the C4 hydroxyl of the previous unit, forming a glycosidic bond and expelling one water molecule per link. This simulator animates that step-by-step polymerization and lets you switch the bond geometry between the two configurations that dominate plant carbohydrate chemistry.

α1→4 bond: consecutive units bend the same way → helix (starch, glycogen)
β1→4 bond: consecutive units flip 180° → straight ribbon (cellulose)

Bond type — α1→4 links stack with a consistent bend, coiling the chain into a helix; β1→4 links alternate orientation every unit, producing a flat, straight, highly rigid fiber.
Chain length — how many monosaccharide units are linked; every real polysaccharide is built the same way, just far longer (glycogen can exceed 50,000 units).
Formation speed — how fast new units are added and their water molecule ejected, so the condensation step can be watched frame by frame or sped through.
Helix twist — the per-unit rotation angle used only for the α-linked case, since it is what produces starch's coiled shape instead of a flat chain.

Real-world relevance: α1→4 glycosidic bonds make starch and glycogen easy for digestive enzymes to hydrolyze back into glucose for energy, while the alternating β1→4 bonds in cellulose resist most animal enzymes entirely — the same monomer, linked differently, becomes either food or structural fiber.
