Terpene Cyclization Cascade (2D)

Monoterpene synthase enzymes turn one linear ten-carbon precursor, geranyl pyrophosphate, into an entire family of scent and flavor molecules through a single carbocation cascade. This 2D companion renders that same cascade as a flat schematic: the chain ionizes as its pyrophosphate group departs, folds into a six-membered ring as the resulting allylic cation is attacked intramolecularly, and then branches at the α-terpinyl cation into one of three real biosynthetic outcomes you choose — deprotonation to limonene, water capture to α-terpineol, or a second transannular cyclization and methyl shift to the bicyclic α-pinene. A live schematic energy diagram tracks the reaction coordinate through each barrier, and an Arrhenius-equation readout shows how the rate-limiting cyclization's rate constant depends on temperature.
