When sulfide minerals like pyrite (FeS₂) are exposed to both air and water — by mining, road cuts, or any excavation into sulfide-bearing rock — they oxidize into sulfuric acid and iron hydroxide, slowly turning nearby streams acidic and metal-laden. This 2D canvas simulator lets you crush a pile of pyrite fragments to different surface areas and control how much oxygen reaches them, watching the drainage water's pH fall in real time on a live graph as acid accumulates, while dissolved heavy metals rise the further the pH drops. A limestone-remediation slider lets you test the same neutralization strategy used at real mine sites to bring the water back toward neutral and lock the metals back up as solids.
