Trolley Problem: Switch vs Footbridge

This simulation stages the two classic variants of the trolley problem in real 3D and lets you test your own moral intuitions against two competing ethical frameworks. In the switch variant a runaway trolley bears down on a group of people on the main track; you can pull a lever to divert it onto a side track with a different number of people. In the footbridge variant the only way to stop the trolley before it reaches its victims is to push a bystander from an overhead footbridge into its path. Adjustable head counts let you explore how the utilitarian calculus (minimise total deaths) and the deontological doctrine of double effect (harm as foreseen side effect versus harm as the means) can agree on one variant and sharply disagree on the other, even when the numbers are identical.
