Plant Water-Carbon Balance: Photosynthesis vs Transpiration

This simulation models the fundamental resource trade-off at the heart of plant biology: every stoma that opens to let carbon dioxide in for photosynthesis also lets water vapor escape as transpiration. Drive a 3D plant's stomatal aperture, soil moisture, light intensity and atmospheric vapor pressure deficit and watch water rise from the roots through the xylem while vapor leaves through the leaf's stomata, with live readouts of transpiration rate, photosynthetic rate, leaf water potential and accumulated sugar reserve. Push it too far — wide-open stomata over dry soil, or a high vapor pressure deficit — and the leaf water potential collapses past the wilting point, the guard cells lose turgor, the canopy visibly droops, and stomatal conductance falls even though the aperture slider hasn't moved, exactly the way real plants self-regulate to survive drought stress.
