A worker honeybee spends roughly the first 21 days of her life developing inside a single wax cell — egg, then larva, then pupa — before chewing her way out as an adult. From there she does not keep one job for life. Instead she moves through a predictable sequence of roles as she ages, a pattern biologists call temporal polyethylism: cell cleaner, nurse, builder / food-handler, guard, and finally forager, roughly from the hive centre outward to the entrance and the world beyond it.
Because task depends on age rather than a fixed identity, the whole colony can flexibly reshuffle its workforce — if too many foragers are lost, younger bees mature into that role early, and the hive keeps functioning almost like a single organism reallocating labour.
