A "split" divides one honeybee colony into two by moving frames of bees, brood and food into a second box — a nucleus colony, or "nuc." A viable nuc needs, at minimum, a frame carrying eggs or very young larvae (so it can raise a queen if it doesn't get one), a frame of food (honey and pollen), and enough adult bees to keep the brood warm.
Timing is everything: split too early in spring and there may not be enough drones around for a virgin queen to mate with; split too late and swarming season may already have taken half the parent colony's bees with it.
Move frames from a parent hive into a new nucleus box, pick how the nuc gets its queen, and scrub through the days afterward to watch a queen cell develop or a mated queen start laying.
A viable nuc needs a frame of eggs/young larvae, a frame of food, and enough bees to cover the brood. How the nuc gets a queen — walk-away, caged mated queen, or a ripe cell — changes how many days pass before it is queenright.
Set how many frames go to the nuc, choose a split method, then drag the day slider (or tick auto-advance) to watch the queen cell grow and cap, the virgin queen emerge and mate, and egg-laying resume.
A walk-away split usually takes three to four weeks before the nuc is queenright, while a caged mated queen can have it laying again within days — the trade-off is cost and the extra step of sourcing a queen.
