A safe school apiary hinges on one deceptively simple trick: making bees fly up and over people rather than through them. Beekeepers do this with a flyway barrier — a hedge, fence panel or willow screen placed close to the hive entrance. Because bees naturally climb steeply to clear an obstacle right in front of them, a barrier just a couple of metres tall lifts the whole foraging flight path above head height long before it reaches a playground, path or classroom window.
Many national beekeeping associations' school-apiary guidance recommends a barrier of at least 1.8–2m directly in front of the hive entrance, sited so the entrance faces away from walkways — this single design choice does more for day-to-day safety than almost any other part of a school beekeeping programme.

Bees climb steeply to clear an obstacle placed close to the entrance. A taller barrier, or more room to climb before it, raises the flight line — shrinking the ground-level buffer zone needed beyond the hedge.

Most school-apiary safety guidance treats the flyway barrier as the single most important design decision — more important even than fencing the whole plot — because it works with bee flight behaviour rather than against it.
