How it works — separation, cohesion, foraging

Coatis forage as a loose band: individuals fan out to check separate fruit and insect patches, but a short-range separation force keeps neighbours from colliding and a longer-range cohesion force pulls every coati back toward the troop's centroid, so the band never permanently fractures. Each coati steers toward the nearest patch it hasn't just visited; on arrival the patch's yield drops and slowly regrows, and the coati picks a new target.

Troop size — more foragers means more local separation conflicts, which widens the band's average radius.
Food patch spread — scattering patches over a larger area increases travel time per contact and naturally lowers cohesion, since foragers have to range further from each other to reach different patches.
Cohesion strength — the pull-back-to-centroid weight; push it high and the troop huddles even while foraging in different directions, push it low and it behaves like independent foragers.
Food contacts — cumulative count of patch visits across the whole troop, the group's foraging throughput.
