This 2D simulator draws a garden hummingbird hovering between blossoms, feeding on nectar and darting off to the next flower, with its wingbeat frequency, stroke amplitude, body mass and wing length all feeding a real actuator-disk hovering-flight model. Tune the sliders to see how a heavier body or shorter wings drive up the hover power needed to stay aloft, while a faster or wider wingbeat raises wingtip speed — the same aerodynamics that let real hummingbirds hover, fly backward, and burn energy faster relative to their body size than almost any other animal.
