How it works

Worker bees build hexagonal wax cells because regular hexagons tile a flat surface with no gaps and need the least wax per unit of storage volume — the same "honeycomb conjecture" mathematicians eventually proved optimal. Up to six cells fill with honey at once, brightening from pale wax to amber as they fill; when one finishes, another empty cell nearby starts.

Bees wander the space in front of the comb on their own schedule, picking a new random target every second or two. Scout bees that find nectar recruit nestmates with the "waggle dance" — a figure-eight run whose angle off vertical encodes the sun-relative direction to the flower and whose duration encodes distance. This sim models the outcome of that recruitment directly: click anywhere to drop nectar, and nearby bees are pulled toward it for a few seconds before returning to free flight.
