2D Cellular Automaton Rule Classifier — Langton's λ on a Moore Lattice

The 3D version of this simulator extrudes six one-dimensional CA rows into relief so the row-by-row history reads as depth. This 2D companion instead runs six genuinely two-dimensional outer-totalistic automata on real toroidal Moore lattices — the same family Conway's Life belongs to — and draws each panel's live grid directly as pixels, no fake extrusion involved. Six random rule tables are spread across Langton's λ parameter and stepped forward together, so the transition from order to periodicity to structured 2D complexity to full chaos is visible directly as λ sweeps the rule space. Each panel's class label is computed live from its own generation-to-generation flip rate — the same empirical signature used to locate the edge of chaos in the cellular-automaton literature — so changing λ or the initial condition immediately re-derives the classification for every rule.
